How to use your ant farm toolkit without stressing the colony
- Before first use, rinse the syringe, dropper, and feeding trays with plain water. No soap. Residue from manufacturing can irritate a small founding colony.
- Use the 5 ml syringe to add water to the water feeder or directly to a cotton ball in the test tube. Aim for damp, not wet. For Lasius niger and most founding queens, a humidity range of 50-70% in the nest chamber is the target.
- Place food (small insect pieces, sugar water drops) directly onto a feeding tray. Remove uneaten food within 24-48 hours using the curved tweezers or the double-ended hook. This keeps mold out of the outworld.
- Use the soft brush and cotton swabs to clean the outworld walls and feeding tray corners. Avoid cleaning the nest chamber itself during the founding stage. Disturbance at that point can cause the queen to abandon her brood.
- The 10 mm rubber plugs seal nest port openings when you are not actively working with the setup. Keep one plug in place whenever the colony is not being fed or observed, especially during the first 4-8 weeks of founding.

If your nest uses a different port diameter, measure before ordering. The rubber hose (also 10 mm, about 7 cm long) connects two ports of the same size for tube-to-nest setups.
