The Beginning: 2003

It all started in a small garage in the USA, where at 58 years old, I—a retired engineer with a lifelong passion for nature—stumbled upon an ant colony in my garden. Rather than destroying it, I became fascinated. How did these tiny creatures organize themselves so perfectly? How did they communicate? How could humans learn from them?

My curiosity led me to build the first formicarium—a carefully designed glass habitat to observe the ants' behavior. My son, then 22-year-old Anton, a recent graduate with interests in both biology and business, noticed something remarkable in my project: not just scientific wonder, but an untapped opportunity to share this fascination with the world.

"Dad, imagine if other people could experience this," Anton said one evening, watching the ant colony work in perfect harmony. "Imagine if families could learn about nature this way."

That conversation changed everything.

2003-2005: The Garage Era

Anton and I build our first kits by hand in a garage. We perfect our designs through countless experiments, learning which materials work best, which ant species thrive in captivity, and what beginners really need.

2006-2010: Going Online

We launch the first theformicarium.com website, initially as a hobby site. Word spreads through ant-keeping forums. We ship our first kit to friends, then across the country, then internationally.

2011-2015: Expansion

We make an official move to a larger facility to scale operations. We hire our first employees—all passionate ant keepers themselves. A dedicated blog launches, with hundreds of educational articles.

2016-2023: Global Community

The Formicarium becomes the world's premier ant-keeping supplier. We reach customers in 80+ countries. Thousands of successful colonies started through our kits. A thriving YouTube channel and social community built.
