I picked up my first flat acrylic nest years ago, thinking it would last one colony cycle. It cracked along the port after six months because the plastic was too thin and the port fittings were press-fit with no tolerance for humidity expansion. That experience is exactly why I pay attention to port design now. This nest uses a bow-back chamber profile: the slight curve on the rear panel distributes pressure evenly, so the acrylic does not stress-crack when you tighten a tube connector.
The 3D-printed internal structure is the real differentiator. Instead of milled channels (which leave micro-burrs that injure small workers), the printed lattice gives you smooth, rounded galleries sized for big-headed species. Messor barbarus majors, Camponotus (carpenter ants) with their larger thorax, and similar polymorphic species move through without getting wedged.
