How to set up and maintain your beginner ant farm nest

  • Insert the moisturizing tube of your choice before adding ants. Use the long tube for the first fill; it keeps the nesting chambers at stable humidity for up to 20 days without intervention.
  • Place the nest on a flat, stable surface away from direct sunlight. Most beginner-friendly species like Lasius niger prefer ambient room temperature (65-77 F / 18-25 C) with no heat mat needed at the founding stage.
  • Check the moisture tube every 10-14 days. Refill with distilled or filtered water using a small syringe. Tap water works in a pinch but can leave mineral deposits over time.
  • Keep the foraging area clean. Remove uneaten food within 24-48 hours to prevent mold. A dry cotton swab works well for spot-cleaning the acrylic walls without disturbing the colony.
  • If your colony outgrows the nest (workers consistently clustering near the entrance, brood piling up in the foraging zone), that is a healthy sign. Upgrade to the big size or connect an outworld to give them more room.
