How to set up and refill your ant farm water feeder correctly

  • Rinse the feeder with plain water before first use. No soap, no detergent: residue can harm workers.
  • Fill with fresh, dechlorinated water (tap water left uncovered for 30 minutes works fine). Distilled water is also safe.
  • Place the feeder in the outworld, not inside the nest chamber. Ants will find it within a few hours.
  • Wipe the outside of the glass weekly with a damp cloth. If you see mineral deposits forming inside, rinse with a diluted white vinegar solution, then rinse again with plain water before refilling.
  • Handle with care when refilling: glass feeders are sturdy for daily use but will break if dropped on a hard floor. Keep a spare if your setup is complex.

Who actually needs a dedicated ant water tower in their setup

Which size (A1, A2, or A3) should I choose for my colony?
A1 (12ml) works well for small colonies up to roughly 50 to 100 workers, such as a young Lasius niger group. A2 (16ml) covers mid-size colonies of 100 to 300 workers. A3 (20ml) is the better choice for larger or thirstier species like Camponotus, where you want to go longer between refills. When in doubt, size up: a slightly larger reservoir just means fewer refills, not a problem for the ants.

Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as filling a cold feeder with very hot water, which can stress any glass. Used correctly, this is a long-term piece of kit, not a consumable.
