I ran that setup with my first Lasius niger colony (the common black garden ant) and lost two workers in a week before I switched to a proper glass tower feeder. The difference was immediate: the colony stopped clustering around the wet cotton and started foraging normally.

Not the right fit if your colony is still in a founding test tube: at that stage, the cotton plug at the end of the tube provides all the humidity a queen and her first brood need. Wait until you have at least 20 to 30 workers before introducing an open water source.
